Weekly Question: Did you replace your food addiction with another?

Not all WLS patients are food addicts, but a great many are. It's OK to admit that, even if it's only to yourself. Then you can start the recovery process and change habits. Sound familiar? Now that you are on your way to conquering your food addiction, has something else creeped up in its place? Maybe drinking? Sex? Excersize? Shopping?

Exercise for me has definitely replaced my food addiction.  I wake up at 4:15 am everyday to exercise.  I start out by doing a 45 min cardio then a 20 min turbo abs workout one morning, then the next morning, I'd start out by doing a 40 min turbo sculpt then a 20 min turbo abs workout.  I cannot imagine going a day without doing my exercise routine.  I am somewhat addicted to it now.  And I actually feel tired and fatigued when I skip.

The other thing that I think may have replaced my food addiction is shopping.  Not so much as exercise though but I think I may have become a shop-a-holic.

Great question!  Thanks for asking it and giving some examples.  After the weight was gone I would say I definitely replaced food with shopping; I became quite the shopaholic with so many new clothing options to choose from.  Luckily I got that and my credit cards back under control; phew.  Since I often joke that my "vice" is coffee, I think I would have to say that over the last couple of years, I have replaced grazing with coffee.  Instead of nibbling at my desk off and on at work, I would pound down the cofee - regular or decaf.  Now that I'm a stay-at-home mom, I find that I still want to hit the coffee pot - decaf -  so that must still be my vice.

If only I could say I replaced food with exercise, ahhhh!  But I know many of our members have done just that and I'm deeply proud of them, seriously.

Unfortunatly, My shopping has increased emensly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I have probably over 200 pairs of shoes and 400 tops it is out of hand. Also, now all I want to eat is chocolate (candy) and junk foods because I don't digest meats very well and junk (slidder foods) do go down easier.I had surgery 3/24/2003 I lost 168 lbs. I regained 20 lbs within the first year kept it off until 2007 lost my job (homebuilder) laid off for 6 months totally depressed. I regained another 20 lbs in a year. I am doing the 5 day pouch test and exercising again I WILL BEAT THIS THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
